Our Timbers

Our Timbers

Bone Timber stocks a broad range of timbers in all sizes and lengths. Though some of these products come in set lengths, others are less predictable and can range from 1.8m to 5.4m lengths. Custom wood (MDF) and Finger-jointed Primed products are also available in selected profiles.

All timber products are sourced from sustainable timber mills around the world, supporting reforestation.

Pine

Pinus Radiata

Pine

Radiata pine’s colouring is white to pale yellow, but often indistinguishable from the heartwood, which is light brown to yellow. The grain is usually straight, apart from a central core of 100mm, which can twist if the moisture content of the timber changes. The texture of radiata pine is fine, but uneven, and knots are common. The timber is fairly soft and has a low density, often with very wide annual growth rings. Radiata pine plantations are set to become the main source of timber in Australia. Radiata pine can be used in a wide range of applications, including as a domestic and commercial structural timber, flooring, lining, furniture, panels (such as veneer, plywood, particleboard, fibreboard), corestock, brushware, turnery, toys, poles, posts, sleepers, mining timbers (treated), landscaping, pulp and paper.

Meranti

Shorea

Meranti

Meranti is a pale to mid-red-brown timber with a coarse but even texture and interlocked grain, usually giving a ribbon or strip effect to the surface. Meranti is a popular timber used for skirtings, architraves, window mouldings, window sills, doors and claddings. It is mainly used internally however it can be used externally, given that the timber has been treated with an exterior oil or water repellent.

Western Red Cedar

Thuja Plicata

Western Red Cedar

Western Red Cedar is a fawn to dark brown timber originating from Canada, with an uneven fine texture and straight grain. It is also known as Red Cedar, or American Cedar. Western Red is a softwood timber often used externally for fencing, saunas and eve linings due to its weather and temperature durability. It is often found in older properties as a v-joint wall/ceiling cladding.

Australian/ Tasmanian Oak/ Vic Ash

Eucalyptus Regnans

Australian / Tasmanian Oak / Vic Ash

Australian Oak is pale to light brown in colour with a pinkish tinge, with a moderately coarse but even texture. Growth rings are visible but not prominent. Tasmanian oak is a premium Australian hardwood timber encompassing three species that grow in the mountainous areas of Tasmania. It is a versatile timber perfect for both construction and interior applications, including flooring, panelling, architraves and skirting boards.

MDF/ Custom Wood

Medium Density Fibreboard

MDF / Custom Wood

MDF is a high-grade, composite material. It is made from recycled wood fibres and resin. It is dried and pressed to produce dense, stable sheets. Because of this process, MDF does not warp or crack like timber. Uses of MDF include:

  • Furniture
  • Cabinets and shelves
  • Flooring
  • Decorative Mouldings
  • Doors and door frames
  • Trade show booths and theatre set construction
  • American Oak

    Quercus Alba

    American Oak

Similar in colour and appearance to European oak. American oak is mostly straight-grained with a medium to coarse texture, with longer rays than red oak. It is used for a wide range of applications, including shipping and boat building, flooring, architectural joinery, exterior joinery, railways sleepers and timber bridges due to its strength and resistance to decay. It is also an excellent timber for high-grade furniture, interior woodwork and panelling.

    Kapur

    Dryobalanops Spp

    Kapur

Kapur ranges from almost white to light yellowish brown in colour and is clearly demarcated from the heartwood, which is red to reddish brown. Kapur wood exhibits variable grains from straight to spiral, to deeply interlocked grains that create a striking figure. The wood has a moderately coarse to even texture. Kapur is suitable for general construction: posts, beams, joists, rafters, fender supports, telegraphic and power transmission posts and cross arms. It is used in door and window frames and sills, flooring, staircases and internal joinery.

    Oregon/ Douglas Fir

    Pseudotsuga Menziesii

    Oregon/ Douglas Fir

Douglas fir ranges in colour from yellow through orange to a deep reddish brown. Grain is generally straight with a pronounced difference in colour between earlywood and latewood that results in a highly distinctive figure on back-sawn surfaces. The texture is often coarse and uneven. Douglas fir is commonly found as sawn timber in weather-protected heavy construction applications such as mining timbers, posts and poles. Treated pilings and boards are used in marine structures and for landscaping. Other common applications include general house framing, flooring, lining, fascias, bargeboards and pergolas. It is also used in joinery, turnery, carving and plywood.

    Merbau

    Insia Bijuga

    Merbau

Merbau will initially appear as yellowish-brown or orange-brown before deepening to a pale to dark reddish brown once cut. The wood grain is variable but usually interlocked or wavy, which produces a ribbon figure on the radial surface. The timber has a coarse but even texture. Merbau spans a variety of uses in the fields of engineering, construction, marine and furnishings, both for indoors and outside. It has been utilised for infrastructure projects including cross arms, bridge building, piles, sleepers, posts, wharves and mining timbers. In the construction context, Merbau is used in framing, decking, treads and other general needs. Many boats, particularly the decks, are made of Merbau, as are a variety of vats, musical instruments and tool handles. As a furniture material, Merbau is prominent in outdoor settings and barbeque trolleys, as well as being valued for turning, panelling, joinery, shop fitting, cabinet making, parquet flooring, carving, veneer, counter and bench tops.

    Spotted Gum

    Corymbia Maculata

    Spotted Gum

Spotted gum timbers are available in a range of colours depending on the location of the source forest. The heartwood ranges from light brown through definite browns to deep red-brown hues. Spotted gum is a moderately coarse and uneven textured wood with some timbers having the additional feature of a wavy grain, giving rise to an attractive fiddle back figure. Spotted gum is used for a variety of applications, including structural building members, such as posts and poles, and for framing, flooring, lining, decking and cladding. It is also used in boatbuilding and is the primary Australian timber used for the handles of tools and implements that are subject to high-impact forces. Spotted gum is a suitable carving and woodturning timber and is used in the manufacture of both indoor and outdoor furniture. Outdoor furniture in spotted gum has consistently won industry awards in Australia and is exported to destinations around the world.
