The Stirling Residence was not one of them.
Perched in the Adelaide Hills and designed by Genworth Group, this French inspired Neo-Classical residence was conceived around proportion, symmetry and carefully considered architectural detail. Every room relied on substantial mouldings and precise transitions to achieve the timeless elegance associated with classical European homes.
For Bone Timber, the project was not simply about manufacturing timber mouldings. It was about translating an architectural vision into components that did not exist anywhere else.

Designing Profiles That Match the Scale of the Home
One of the defining characteristics of classical architecture is proportion.
As ceiling heights increase and rooms become larger, the architectural detailing must grow with them. Standard skirting boards and architraves that work perfectly in a conventional home can appear visually undersized within grander spaces.
For the Stirling Residence, Bone Timber manufactured oversized skirting boards, substantial architraves and custom decorative mouldings designed specifically for the proportions of the home. Rather than selecting the closest available profile from a catalogue, every element was manufactured to suit the architecture.
The result is subtle, but it influences how every room feels. The mouldings do not compete with the design. They complete it.
The Challenge of Curved Architecture

One of the home's most distinctive features is the sweeping curved opening connecting the kitchen and scullery.
Curved openings present a unique manufacturing challenge. Traditional straight mouldings cannot simply be bent to achieve a consistent architectural profile. Any inconsistency becomes immediately noticeable once painted.
Using CNC manufacturing technology, Bone Timber produced custom curved profiles that maintained the exact same detail and dimensions as the adjoining straight sections. This ensured the transition flowed seamlessly around the opening without interrupting the architectural language of the home.
It is one of those details most people will never consciously notice, but they immediately recognise that everything feels balanced and refined.
Why Material Selection Matters
Every profile for the Stirling Residence was manufactured from premium finger jointed pine.
While MDF is commonly used for interior mouldings, finger jointed pine offers several advantages for projects of this calibre. It provides greater stability, excellent machining characteristics and improved performance in areas where occasional moisture may be present.
For homes in environments such as the Adelaide Hills, these characteristics help ensure the finished mouldings continue to perform long after installation.

More Than Individual Profiles
Perhaps the greatest challenge was not producing a single moulding. It was ensuring every moulding worked together.
Throughout the residence, skirting boards, architraves, window reveals, cabinetry mouldings and decorative trims all share a consistent architectural language. The eye naturally moves from one space to another because every profile has been considered as part of a complete design.
This level of consistency is rarely achieved using standard mouldings sourced from multiple manufacturers. It requires custom manufacturing and close collaboration between the builder, designer, cabinetmaker and manufacturer from the earliest stages of the project.
